After the astounding three deaths of cyclists in our county in 2020, Champaign County Bikes (CCB) decided we needed a new approach.  Our years of advocating for cyclists, developing safety programs, providing training for both day-to-day cyclists and Licensed Cycling Instructors, working with municipalities on infrastructure, and staging recreational events needed an additional approach.  We needed to directly address the relationship of cyclists and motorists on our public roads. 

Many motorists and cyclists do not know there is an Illinois state law, passed in 2008, which requires motorists to give 3 feet of clearance when passing a cyclist.  We decided that awareness of this law will stimulate better understanding of proper relationships on the road.  To achieve that understanding CCB decided to use the IDOT 3 Foot informational sign to raise awareness of the law. 

To make it easier for municipalities and other governmental units to initiate the program CCB decided to buy the signs and give them to the municipalities which would install them in appropriate locations.  To date we have been able to get signs installed across the county.  You have probably already seen them.  We will have another 4 signs installed in Savoy in the next few weeks with an additional 2 planned when we receive additional signs.  You can check out the currently installed sign locations at our 3 Foot Sign Photo Gallery.  We will be adding new photos and locations as signs are installed.

Now we need your help to continue the program.

We have exhausted our first order of 25 signs.  We ask for your help in sponsoring signs for us to give away.  Any donation will be appreciated, but you can best help with donations of the categories below:

$150 – Supports the placement of two signs to “protect” a stretch of road in both directions.

$75 – Fully fund the placement of one sign.

$37.50 – Join with a friend and fund one sign.

$____ – Any amount that you are comfortable with.

The sign is an Illinois Department of Transportation approved road sign. It is heavy duty aluminum, 42” x 24”, three color, with reflective background. It’s built to last. 

 Where do we need more signs placed?  Help us get the signs to where they are needed.  Suggest a location for a 3 Foot Sign.  Be as specific as possible and we will discuss the location with participating municipalities.
