Vision Zero

Vision Zero is an international movement and strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. Vision Zero uses a Safe Systems Approach integrating human failings in roadway design and transportation management to prevent fatal and severe crashes.

Traffic deaths and serious injuries are preventable!

Local efforts in Champaign County are described at People for Safe Streets.

National efforts related to Vision Zero are here: https://visionzeronetwork.org/

Lowering the Speed Limit on all neighborhood streets is the single most effective action to lower traffic fatalities and serious injuries that can be taken now without long term roadway redesign. St Joseph, Mahomet, and Ludlow in Champaign County have already lowered their village streets to 25 mph. Savoy is considering the same action. The City of Urbana has adopted a Vision Zero resolution but hasn’t moved forward on next steps while the City of Champaign is in preliminary discussions.

Survivability when struck by a vehicle traveling 20, 30, and 40 mph

From ProPublica’s Lena Groeger using AAA Safety Foundation data, “the average pedestrian struck by a driver traveling at 20 mph has a 93 percent chance of surviving. For a 70-year-old, the chances are somewhat lower but still a robust 87 percent.”

Email your city council or village representative to say that you support lower, safer speed limits.
